The traditional mandibular nerve block has one of the lowest success rates of major nerve blocks administered in the human body. In this Presentation, you will come to understand the techniques developed for more positive results in the mandible, including the Gow-Gates and Akinosi-Vazirani nerve blocks; intraosseous anesthesia; and periodontal ligament injection (PDL). You will also investigate the local anesthetic articaine HCl, which has had considerable success when administered by mandibular infiltration in adults, and other buffered local anesthetics that have demonstrated an increased success rate both in onset and depth of anesthesia.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the technique for the traditional inferior alveolar nerve block (e.g. ‘mandibular block’).
List four alternative techniques/procedures for achieving mandibular anesthesia
Describe the technique for the Gow-Gates mandibular nerve block.
