Dr. Peter Gerngross was appointed Director of Oral Health Quality and Research for the Office of Dentistry in November of 2023. The group is tasked with improving the oral health of Veterans by promoting clinical practices based on the best evidence available, utilizing VA-based data and scientific literature. Dr. Gerngross joined the VA in 1999 as a resident completing a 3-year advanced education program in prosthodontics followed by a 1-year fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He returned to the VA as staff in 2004. During his tenure at the Michael E. DeBakey VAMC, he served in multiple roles and national committees. Before joining the VA, he served 4 years in the USPHS as a commissioned officer in the IHS at Gallup Indian Medical Center. While in service, he completed a 2-year AGPR.
Dr. Gerngross has a BS in Liberal Arts and Sciences, a BS in Dentistry, a DDS from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and an MS from the UT Dental School in Houston. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics and a past president, a member of the American Dental Association and the American College of Prosthodontists.
